Weekly Tip 40

Update boot images to latest version in ConfigMgr

When you update the ADK that is used by ConfigMgr and you don’t install an update for ConfigMgr, you have to manually import the new boot images. Follow these steps to do that:

  1. Update the ADK to the latest version
  2. Make a backup copy of the OSD directory in your ConfigMgr installation directory
  3. Delete both boot.wim files in each of the x64 and x86 folders of the OSD directory
    • There will be a file called boot.wim and another file called boot..wim in each directory. Delete both.
  4. Copy the winpe.wim files your ADK installation directory from the amd64 and i386 folders to the respective directories in the OSD directory
    • By default, the Windows 10 ADK installation directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Kits\10\Assessment and Deployment Kit\Windows Preinstallation Environment
  5. Rename both winpe.wim files to boot.wim
  6. Reload the boot images in the ConfigMgr console
    • Open the properties of the boot image and reselect the boot image from the Data Source tab
  7. Update your distribution points
    • This will create the “delta” boot..wim file in the OSD directory and distribute it to your distribution points
